*** THREE RIVERS SHIRAZ 1991 *** Astonishing reviews from Robert Parker Jr. have catapulted this obscure tin-shack wine from a minor cult wine to super-star status. It has made Chris Ringland (also Rockford’s co-winemaker) the vinous equivalent of a movie star feted from one end of the planet to the other. It was never planned – it just happened. Ringland is a passionate proponent of Barossa Shiraz.
Three Rivers is an impossibly small vinification ranging from two to three hogsheads, making the total make approximately 100 cases at the very most. The fruit is sourced from Chris Ringland's dry-grown vineyard on the edge of the Barossa Valley (but technically in Eden Valley) along Flaxman’s Valley near Randall's Hill. The shallow soils are skeletal granitic sandy loams, but underlying clay podzols allow excellent good water-retaining properties. Cropping levels are extremely small at less than one tonne/acre, meaning highly concentrated fruit. Ringland believes his century-old vines yield Shiraz of unique lushness, tremendous concentration and unusually thick skins. The Vines will ripen up to 17 Baume yet retain excellent acid balance and flavour.
Ringland describes Three Rivers as a celebration of tiny parcels of true vineyard selected fruit. The wines are “painstakingly hand-made” in open fermenters, regularly plunged to extract colour, flavour and tannins. Towards dryness, the wines are drained and pressed through a traditional wooden basket press. Fermentation is completed in 100% new French oak hogsheads and matured in them for a period of up to 40 months. Three Rivers is opulence, richness and sheer concentration. "More exotic and flamboyant than the Shiraz, but equally profound is the 2004 Shiraz/Viognier The Relic (93% and 7% respectively, cropped at .5 tons of fruit per acre, and aged 20 months in old French oak). An inky/purple-colored, powerful, full-bodied, rich red, it possesses a huge, sweet nose of blue and black fruits, flowers, and subtle oak, a blockbuster mid-section, and an amazingly long finish. More approachable than the 2003 Shiraz, it can be drunk now or cellared for 15 or more years. Dan Standish is one of the Barossa’s up-and-coming superstars, and his wines merit serious attention."
